How to use incense: a beginner's guide
Using incense is simple once you've done it once. Here's how to light sticks, coils and cones safely, and get the most from natural incense.
Incense sticks
- Hold the coated (or thicker) end and light the tip until a small flame catches.
- Gently blow out the flame after a few seconds — you want a glowing ember, not a flame.
- Place the stick in a holder that catches the ash, tilted slightly so ash falls safely.
- Let it burn. A stick usually lasts 20–45 minutes depending on length.
Incense coils and cones
Coils burn for hours and suit larger spaces — rest them on a coil holder over a heat-safe dish. Cones burn downward and give a fuller scent quickly; use a cone holder or a bed of ash. The lighting method is the same: light the tip, blow out the flame, let the ember do the work.
Getting the most from it
- Start with one stick in a well-ventilated room — natural incense is gentle, you don't need much.
- Use it to bookend a ritual: the start of meditation, focused work, tea, or winding down.
- Let scent be a cue. Over time the aroma itself signals your mind to settle.
Safety: Always burn incense in a proper holder on a heat-safe surface, away from anything flammable, and never leave it unattended. Ventilate the room. Keep away from children and pets.
